Record number of Swedes applying to join the Lutheran (protestant) priesthood
A confirmed Greek atheist once said to me, in response to my shock at hearing that he had attended a church service: "every man finds his God when he is in difficulties". I discovered some time back that priests are underrepresented in the unemployment statistics: even the ones who say that they are unemployed tend to enjoy a monthly salary. I am still trying to figure out where the money is coming from. While many may indeed have suddenly found God and are ready to embrace the sanctity of holy life, it is more likely that in these difficult times we face (companies shying away from employing staff, etc.), people (young and old) are simply seeking a means of guaranteeing their financial security. There are two so-called "part-time priests" where I live. The other part of the time they travel around Sweden playing music in a band. It's a wonderful life!
